How Do We Celebrate Independence Day in Indonesia

IMG_9497If America celebrates its independence day with fireworks, Indonesia has other ways to celebrate it. Every year in August 17, the whole country is like drawning in the color of red and white. The color of our flag, red for bravery and white for purity. The flag will be raised up high in front of everyone’s yard, and our national anthem Indonesia Raya will be heard in all over the country.

And in every  districts, the games shall begin. Very fun. You can find sport competitions (volleyball, soccer, cIMG_9493hess, basket ball etc), tarik tambang (in English: tug of war, hah..just find it), makan kerupuk (eating cracker competition ), sepeda hias (decorated bicycles competition), memasukkan paku dalam botol (nail in the bottle), balap karung (sack racing),lomba bakiak (bakiak racing), balap kelereng (marble racing) and other strange and funny games that will make you laughing out loud and not caring who the winner is.

My daughter Najmi got the first prize for sepeda hias (she was really serious in decorating  her bike with Mbok Yati’s help), and my son Ihsan happy enough with his third prize in memasukkan paku dalam botol. They were trying to race in bakiak, but fell after two steps :)
